Interests vs Distractions
We all fall victim to the words "I wish I could _____." Ive done this many times in the past and it always baffles me how we barely ever try to do what we wish we could. its like we think our interests will magically become doable in the span of a few hours. But these take time, and a lot of our time is taken up by small tasks that compound into a whole day.
Ive learned through action and determination that most of the common "wishes" we have are attainable with time and dedication, and that most of what we have to "deal" with is just a distraction from our wishes.
About 2 months ago I couldn't ollie on a skateboard, I could ride around okay but I was nothing special. Today I have Frontside 180s, pop shoves, and im so close to 50-50 grinds. I wasnt at the skate park from morning to night. I was there from 1-3 hours on average and thats a few times a week. Thats about 3-9 hours a week and I was able to learn more than I ever could have imagined in 2 months.
These are some of the things Ive noticed about nurturing your interests and letting go of your distractions. Consider this an almost step by step as to how to make your goals and interests feel more attainable and doable.
Identifying your interests
Take time to explore and discover your genuine interests. Pay attention to the activities or topics that bring you joy, spark your curiosity, or make you lose track of time.
Setting goals
Once you've identified your interests, set specific goals related to them. Goals provide direction and motivation, helping you channel your energy and efforts effectively.
Prioritizing meaningful activities
Focus on activities that align with your interests and goals. Allocate your time and energy to pursuits that bring you satisfaction and allow for personal growth.
Time management
Establish a structured schedule that allocates dedicated time for pursuing your interests. This can help minimize distractions and ensure you have sufficient time to engage with activities that matter to you.
Creating a conducive environment
Set up an environment that supports your interests. Remove or minimize distractions, such as turning off notifications on your electronic devices or finding a quiet space where you can concentrate.
Seeking inspiration and learning
Actively seek inspiration and knowledge related to your interests. Read books, articles, or blogs, watch videos, listen to podcasts, or engage with communities and individuals who share your passions.
Practicing discipline and focus
Developing discipline and the ability to maintain focus is crucial for nurturing interests. Avoid giving in to immediate distractions or short-term gratification, and instead, stay committed to long-term goals.
Embracing challenges
Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth within your areas of interest. It's through overcoming obstacles that you can develop new skills, deepen your knowledge, and find greater fulfillment.
Balancing interests and obligations
While nurturing interests is important, it's also essential to strike a balance between your passions and other obligations in life, such as work or family responsibilities. Find ways to integrate your interests into your routine without neglecting other essential aspects of your life.
Reflection and adaptation
Regularly reflect on your interests, goals, and progress. Assess what works well and what needs adjustment. Adapt your approach as needed to ensure continuous growth and engagement.
