Reasons You Should Invest In Experiences, Not Things

Summer of 2022 was a crazy one. I was juggling being a full time music producer with being a full time app developer, barista, and clothing brand visionary. while all of these things seem like fun projects to do (and they were) it became so overwhelming when the School semester picked back up. I was juggling 5 different full time tasks every single day of my life. Thats what I thought Being productive was. I thought If not every moment of my day was filled up with some sort of task I was wasting time.

As time continued it became unbearable. I lost all my progress and deteriorated back into a shell of a human being that I was trying to escape. Many of us find ourselves trapped in this loop of taking on tasks and then getting overwhelmed by the work load. it was really through Rick Rubins book "The Creative Act: A Way Of Being" that I became infatuated with this idea of letting opportunities come to you through general life experience and being a kind person.

I wanted to highlight some of the important aspects of doing things and not buying things with your money. These are just a handful of some insights Ive gained through the act of being

Lasting Happiness

Experiences tend to provide longer-lasting happiness compared to material possessions. While the initial joy of acquiring something new may fade over time, the memories and positive emotions associated with experiences can be cherished and remembered for years to come. Experiences often become a part of our identity and contribute to our overall well-being.

Connection and Relationships

Experiences are often shared with others, fostering social connections and deepening relationships. Whether it's traveling with friends, attending a concert with loved ones, or participating in group activities, the shared memories and bonds formed during these experiences can strengthen relationships and create a sense of belonging.

Personal Growth and Learning

Experiences have the potential to challenge us, push our boundaries, and facilitate personal growth. Engaging in new activities, exploring different cultures, or learning new skills through experiences can broaden our perspectives, enhance our knowledge, and boost self-confidence. Such growth and learning opportunities are typically not found when solely focused on accumulating material possessions.

Emotionally Rich Life

Investing in experiences allows for a more emotionally rich and fulfilling life. Experiences can evoke a wide range of emotions, from excitement and joy to awe and reflection. They often provide opportunities for self-expression, self-discovery, and a deeper understanding of oneself and the world around us. This can lead to a greater sense of fulfillment and purpose.

Adaptability to Changing Circumstances

Experiences are less vulnerable to depreciation and loss than material possessions. As time passes, our appreciation for possessions may decrease or they may become outdated, but the value of experiences tends to remain intact. Additionally, experiences can be adapted and modified to fit changing circumstances, making them more flexible and resilient investments.
